Covenant House Sleep Out: New York City, March 21, 2014

A very close friend of mine from high school works as a manager and program coordinator of a Wellness Center in southern New Jersey. Working closely with a nationwide shelter organization called the Covenant House, which provides meals, housing, and counseling for homeless youth, she's been inspired to participate in a "Sleep Out" on the streets of New York City.

I, being the friend in Boston that excitedly asked her what she wanted to do for her birthday on that Friday, the 21st of March, she sent me a few links and her idea of sleeping outside in NYC to raise awareness and funding for the Covenant House. Not the exact idea I had in mind, but I can confess that I rarely find time to volunteer, support non-profits, or donate to charities in the hustle and bustle of working and living in Boston.

My lovely best friend is one of the most humble, giving, ridiculously sincere individuals I've had the pleasure to say that I know so well. Despite my nerves about sleeping on the streets of New York for one night, I think about how many homeless children and youth are out there through these harsh winters every night, with no end in sight.

My nerves give way to excitement in participating with my friend, the Covenant House, and hundreds of other young professionals who will sleep outside on March 21st to bring necessary support and funding to this wholesome charity. Let's hope for a little heat wave that weekend, and perhaps a little drizzle to make the experience all the more real and relevant to the plight of homeless youth.
